Glossary of Consulting Buzzwords

SWOT analysis is a study of an organization’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.

Competitive landscape is a form of analysis that helps a nonprofit identify its rivals or competitors. It might start with a process to identify and understand competitors, include an analysis of their strengths and weaknesses, and identify how the organization can improve upon what its competition is doing.

Theory of change: is a tool for developing solutions to complex social problems. It provides a comprehensive picture of the early- and intermediate-term changes needed to reach a long-term goal. A basic TOC explains how a group of early and intermediate accomplishments sets the stage for producing long-range results. A more complete TOC articulates the assumptions about the process through which change will occur and specifies the ways in which all of the required early and intermediate outcomes related to achieving the desired long-term change will be brought about and documented.

Comparative advantage or competitive advantage is the ability of an organization to realize impacts or results at a lower cost than other organizations.

Accountability model is an organization’s or program’s evaluation framework. Utilizing its logic model it builds in a series of metrics to assess both the process and product (outputs and outcomes). It is paired with a schedule of monitoring, review & analysis and revision.

Metrics are standards of measurement by which efficiency, performance, progress, or quality of a plan, process, or product can be assessed. They are the foundation of any performance monitoring strategy.

Benchmarking is the process of comparing a business model’s process, practice or performance against those of others or against a known external standard.

Logic model: Logic models provide the basic framework for evaluation and accountability. It describes a program or organization in evaluation terms. It illustrates a program’s theory of change, showing how day-to-day activities connect to the results or outcomes the program is trying to achieve. It articulates inputs, outputs, short-, mid-, and long-term outcomes.
